Is crispbread Swedish?December 02, 2008

Crispbread has been baked in Sweden by Wasabröd since 1919, and is now sold in over 40 countries around the world. The crispbread dates back to medieval times when it was baked in Sweden and Finland to preserve the crop over the long and cold winters. So - Yes.

Where does the name Wasabröd come from?December 02, 2008

Wasabröd is a combination of the two words Wasa and bröd. Bröd is the Swedish word for bread and Wasa is associated from the name of the Swedish king Gustav Vasa and was picked to create an easy recognizable brand for all Swedes.

How long does crispbread keep?December 02, 2008

Wasabröd crisp bread has a shelf-life of approximately 10 months under normal storage conditions. All our products carry a best-before date.

Where is crispbread baked?December 02, 2008

Wasabröd has three bakeries, one in Filipstad, Sweden, one in Hamar, Norway and one in Celle, Germany.

What does Wasabröd do to eliminate allergens?December 02, 2008

Nuts

There are no nuts in any of our crispbread products. None of our crispbread production involves nuts or traces of nuts.

If other Wasa products contain nuts or traces of nuts, this is clearly stated on the package.

Milk

Three Wasabröd products on the Swedish market contain milk: Wasa Havreknäcke, Crisp n' Light and all varieties of Wasa Sandwich.

If these products are manufactured on the same line as milk-free products, Wasabröd’s process and hygiene routines guarantee that there is no risk of contamination.

Gluten

Gluten is part of the protein in wheat, rye, oats and barley. There is less gluten in rye than in wheat, but most varieties of our crisp bread contain gluten. For people with gluten intolerance, we supply a special Wasa Gluten Free and Lactose Free, which is completely free from gluten and lactose. Our rice cakes are naturally free from gluten.

How does Wasabröd ensure the quality of its raw materials and products?December 02, 2008

After many years of experience and research, Wasabröd has evolved its own specific standards regarding the flour in its products. This applies both to the flour itself and the farming of the grain it is milled from. Wasabröd’s environmental plan states that “the content of biological/chemical contaminants (e.g. pesticides, aflatoxins, heavy metals) in the raw materials for Wasabröd’s products may not exceed 75% of current EU-approved levels”. Our standards for raw materials are guaranteed both through meticulous quality control and through exacting requirements of our suppliers. Wasabröd assesses and monitors risk according to HACCP (see the website of the Swedish National Food Administration (Livsmedelsverket): www.slv.se. We are certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BRC.

What is malt?January 27, 2009

Malt is used to add colour and flavour to the bread. Malt is made up of malted barley.

Baking bread from sourdough is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Sourdough enhances the flavour of the bread.

What is E471?January 27, 2009

For Wasabröd products, mono- and diglycerids extracted from vegetable fat to aid the baking process.

What is dietary fibre?January 27, 2009

Fibres are partially or totally  indigestible carbohydrates. They absorb fluids and expand, which makes us feel full and improves the efficiency of our intestines. Wholemeal flours contain a lot of fibre.

What is wholemeal flour?January 27, 2009

Wholegrain flour is flour made from the whole grain, germ and shell of the grain. Wholegrain ingredients are made from the whole kernel, including the endosperm, bran and germ like in the intact kernel. Wholegrain ingredients can be present in many forms; like flour, whole kernels, cracked kernels, flakes, etc.

The % Wholegrain claim on the pack of Wasa products is based on the cereal part of the product. “100% wholegrain” indicates that all cereal ingredients used in the product are wholegrain.

 

What spices are used in Wasabröd crispbread?January 27, 2009

Classic spices such as cumin, aniseed, fennel, coriander and cinnamon are used in the production of crispbread. Sesame seed and poppy seeds are also used to improve the flavour of some products. For more information see declaration of content on the wrapping.

Which products contain sugar?January 27, 2009

All products contain the sugar that is a natural part of the rye grain (approx. 5 per cent). Some products contain added sugar. See the declaration of content on the wrapping.

How many calories does a slice of crispbread contain?January 27, 2009

Between 30-60 kcal per slice. For more information please see declaration on pack.

How many calories does Wasa Sandwich contain and how should it be stored?January 27, 2009

Wasa Sandwich contains between 480 and 500 kcal per 100g. The Sandwich does not contain any preservatives and should, like other crispbread, be stored in a dry and dark place.

What is rye and where is it grown??January 27, 2009

Rye is a cereal. It is predominantly grown in northern Europe (Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland) and neighbouring countries in Eastern Europe (Russia, Belarus, Poland and the Baltic States). You can read more about rye at http://rye.vtt.fi.
